TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Health professionals, and 1985 Nobel Peace Prize recipients, Physicians for Social Responsibility - Florida (PSR-FL) spoke out at the Governor'urging Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis to issue an Executive Order requiring the wearing of masks when in public places in Florida.

Dr Ron Saff, Board member for PSR-FL, and allergist in Tallahassee said, "our state has re-opened and more and more people are expanding their social interaction and we are now seeing a record number of cases of coronavirus in Florida." He further remarked, "a simple cloth face covering or mask could prevent the virus spreading between people who are interacting in close proximity. You may not like wearing a mask, but it beats wearing a ventilator."

Dr. Donald Axelrad, Professor of Public Health and Board Member of PSR-FL, is currently teaching Masters of Public Health students about routes of transmission and risk communication strategies regarding coronavirus disease. Dr. Axelrad predicted that COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon. He reminded us that Florida had the highest single-day number of coronavirus cases on June 11, 12, 13 since the start of the pandemic. "So why the failure of the public to take such an easy precaution to stop the spread of the virus?" asks Dr. Axelrad. "We have been desensitized by the pandemic and have started to believe that while one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is just a statistic."

Dr. Howard Kessler, President, PSR-FL, wrapped up the media conference by reminding the public that we can all prevent the spread of the virus and save lives. “We can save lives and boost the economy”, Dr. Kessler said, “by doing simple, common-sense things: We must keep practicing social distancing, keep washing our hands, and we must all wear our masks in public.” “Wearing a mask is not a political issue,” Dr. Kessler stated, “COVID-19 is a health issue: simply put, wearing a mask saves lives."
